New Delhi: While the country now hosts 303 registered products from various sectors under the Geographical Indicators (GI), Orissa has not been able to get a single entity registered under the GI tag after 2012, a statement by the Union Commerce and Industries Ministry says.
As per the latest information on GI tags from the whole country, India, by the end of December 11 last year, was hosting 303 GI tagged products while Orissa has been a centre of 15 products which have been granted GI tags which certifies the geographic specific indigenous product from the area.
According to the statement that has now been submitted in the Lok Sabha and was made public Monday by the ministry, the last product from Orissa which received the GI tag was Orissa Pattachitra (logo) that was granted by the authorities October 5, 2012 while the earliest one was Pipli Aplique Work which was granted the GI tag in 2007.
Some of the products from Orissa which had been awarded the GI tag included-Ganjam Kewda Rooh, Kotpad Handloom Fabric, Orissa Ikat, Khandua Saree, Gopalpur Tussar Fabric, Sambalpuri Bandha Saree, Berhampur Patta among others.
