Cuttack: The state does not face any terrorist threat currently and the state police have at least 80 specially trained personnel to handle any possible terrorist attack, claimed director general of police (DGP) KB Singh Thursday.
“The state is not facing any terrorist threat right now. However, police in Orissa are capable of dealing with acts of terrorism,” said Singh while inaugurating a state-level meeting of Indian Police Service (IPS) officials here.
The DGP asked senior police officials to take immediate steps for checking crimes against women and children in the state. “There should be proper investigations into crimes against women and children. Establishment of a separate desk for women and children at each police station is a welcome step in this regard,” the DGP said.
Expressing concern over the rise in cyber crimes in the state, Singh asked police officials to probe such cases on an urgent basis. “We are mulling to set up three new cyber police stations in the state to deal with cyber crimes,” he said.
The DGP stressed on ensuring proper coordination among police and the public to maintain law and order in the state. He asked police personnel to maintain friendly relations with the common people. “Now, our primary motto is to make police establishment more people friendly. If necessary, we will introduce changes in our training process to groom more people-friendly police officers,” Singh opined.
Singh expressed satisfaction over the decline in Maoist activities in the state and asked police officials to keep a close watch on the movements of the naxalites. “Although Maoist activities have come down significantly in recent days, left-wing extremism is now spreading its tentacles to hitherto unaffected districts including Angul and Mayurbhanj. We should be careful about it,” the DGP told the IPS officers.
Singh also put emphasis on new recruitments for the state police to raise its manpower. He also asked officials to tighten night patrolling in urban areas and take timely action in connection with economic offences in state.
