Bhubaneswar: Filing of nominations by aspiring candidates for students’ union elections in colleges and universities passed off peacefully Thursday without any untoward incident.
The candidates came to their respective institutes in a procession with their supporters and filed their nominations.
Elaborate security arrangements were made in all colleges and universities in view of clashes between rival groups in the last few days.
In Rama Devi women’s university Chinmayee Jena, the BCJD presidential candidate, filed her nomination. Her supporters said they will wait for the final list of candidates October 1 and then prepare their strategy.
Meanwhile, Anushriya Tripathy will contest against Jena as Tanmayee Hota’s candidature was rejected. A final year PG student in biotech, Tripathy will give a tough fight to Jena, said her supporter Anisha Subuddhi.
However, tensions ran high in Capital Law College in Bhubaneswar due to protest by one group of students the institute’s closure while another group blocked the road demanding election. A scuffle ensued between the students and police as the latter tried to evict them from NH 16.
BJB Junior College students also blocked Bhubaneswar-Puri national highway to protest against the decision of the college authorities to cancel elections.
