Notorious criminal hurt in 5th encounter

Puri: A history-sheeter was injured in a police encounter on Bhubaneswar-Puri National Highway at Dakhinakali Square near Satyabadi Sunday night.
Sanjay Behera, involved in a series of crimes in and around the city, received bullet injuries in his right leg. Behera was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack after primary treatment at Sakhigopal hospital.
Earlier, police had nabbed four criminals after successive encounters in the city.

Police claimed that Behera, a resident of Botei under Nimapara block, was involved in the attack on Bhagu Pradhan at Balighat Square April 11. He had also tried to kill a person on the beach over extortion issue a few days ago. Moreover, he was involved in about 100 cases of loot and assault in the Pilgrim City.
Sources said Behera had left his hideout Sunday night and was travelling to Bhubaneswar on a bike. On a tip-off, officials of the special squad, Sadar police station and beach police station chased him and intercepted him at Dakhinakali Square.
It was learnt that Behera alias ‘Para’ first fired at police. He sustained injuries and fell down when security personnel retaliated. Police said Behera was on the run since April. “We had formed a special team to nab Behera, who has been charged with possession of illegal arms and firing at police personnel,” said a police officer.
Notably, city police had captured dreaded anti-social Gora Mallick after an encounter near Delang April 14. Mallick was booked in a series of crimes in Gopinathpur and Atharnala areas. Rabi Pradhan, an accused in the Bhagu Pradhan encounter case, was arrested after an encounter near Gop April 21.

Security personnel had managed to apprehend Sashi Nayak, an accused in the Bikram Sahu murder case, in an encounter near Biraharekrushnapur-Mangalahaat bypass road May 13. Notorious criminal Kalia Subuddhi was injured in a police encounter near Puri-Konark Marine drive July 11.
