New Delhi: Number of stray dogs in Odisha has more than doubled between 2012 and 2019, according to official data.
As per the Livestock Census data, Odisha had 8,62,520 stray dogs in 2012 which increased to 17,34,399 in 2019, Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Parshottam Rupala told the Lok Sabha Tuesday.
Rupala also informed that there is no provision of financial aid for the victims suffering due to accidents caused because of stray dogs.
Replying to an unstarred question by Kottayam MP Thomas Chazhikadan, Rupala told the Lok Sabha that number of stray dogs is declining in the country as per Livestock Census, 2019.
The number of stray dogs declined from 171.4 lakh in 2012 to 153.1 lakh in 20th Census conducted in 2019.
As per the census, Uttar Pradesh has 20,59,261 stray dogs where as Maharashtra has third highest number of street dogs with 12,76,399 and Rajasthan stood fourth with 12,75,596 stray dogs followed by Karnataka with 11,41,173.
Among others, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh have 11,40,165 and 10,09,076 canine population living on the streets.
