Nuapada: A police constable was arrested Sunday for allegedly taking Rs 2 lakh from a youth on the promise of securing him a home guard job, police said.
The accused, identified as constable Jogendra Bag, 39, was posted at Lakhna police station in Nuapada district’s Komna block.
According to a complaint lodged by Amitabh Jagat of Dangargaon under Godal gram panchayat in Sinapali police station limits, the accused assured Jagat of arranging a home guard job for him. Jagat allegedly paid Rs 2 lakh to Bag through a cheque January 21.
However, after the results of the examination held for the home guard post was published, Jagat found that his name was not on the list. He subsequently asked Bag to return the money several times, but the constable allegedly kept delaying the repayment on one pretext or the other, the complaint said. With no other option, Jagat approached Sinapali police and lodged a written complaint. Police registered a case (295/2026) under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Acting on the complaint, a team led by Khariar sub-divisional police officer Upendra Pradhan and Sinapali police station inspector Maheswar Panigrahi arrested Bag from Lakhna police station. Bag was produced in court that rejected his bail plea and sent him to judicial custody. Further investigation is underway, Panigrahi said.
