Bhubaneswar: CPI(M) Odisha State Committee will launch a statewide campaign against the proposed amendments to the mining law, while also raising concerns over flood rehabilitation, textbook shortages and livelihood issues.
A two-day CPI(M) Odisha State Committee meeting here decided to launch a statewide campaign against the proposed MMDR Amendment Bill, 2026, raising concerns over state’s rights over its mineral resources, the livelihood of people in mining areas, environmental protection and public interest.
The party said mass meetings would be organised in mining districts, followed by a demonstration outside the state Assembly September 29. It also announced continued joint programmes with Left and INDIA bloc parties on the issue. The meeting also demanded adequate compensation and rehabilitation for fl ood victims, full compensation for crop losses, and long-term measures to control floods.
CPI(M) district and area committees will visit affected regions to assess losses and formulate local campaigns. The party also expressed concern over the shortage of textbooks in government schools and demanded timely supply of books, adequate teachers, scholarships, and hostel facilities. It called for a review of the school merger policy and the strengthening of public education.
The meeting further decided to intensify campaigns on employment, minimum wages, social security, remunerative farm prices, tribal land and resource rights, women’s safety and livelihoods, and protection of public healthcare and education. The meeting was attended by Politburo member Srideep Bhattacharya and Central Secretariat member K Hemalata. State secretary Suresh Chandra Panigrahi presented the organisational report.
