Odisha eves clinch rugby gold

Odisha women’s rugby team players pose with their medals and winners’ trophy at Chandigarh, Sunday   

Bhubaneswar: Odisha women’s team emerged champions in the Senior National Rugby Sevens Championships, which concluded at the Punjab University in Chandigarh, Sunday.

In the final, Odisha put up a dominating display to blank arch rivals West Bengal 22-0. Such was the dominance of Odisha players that the opposition were reduced to mere spectators. The state eves had beaten Maharashta 15-10 in the semifinals and thrashed Delhi 24-0 in their quarterfinal encounter.

However in comparison to the eves, the men’s team finished a disappointing sixth place.

 

Matches rescheduled

All the matches of the U-19 Inter-District cricket tournament to be played Monday at various grounds in Cuttack have been postponed, Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) stated through a press release. All these matches have been rescheduled to June 28, which happens to be a rest day.

Seven players from Odisha have been named among the 45-members squad, announced by Hockey India Sunday for the senior women’s national camp at the Sports Authority of India in Bangalore, starting June 26.

The players are Deep Grace Ekka, Sunita Lakra, Rashmita Minz, Lilima Minz, Namita Toppo, Anupa Lakra and Birajini Ekka.

The camp will help in preparing the Indian team for the upcoming Women’s Hockey World Cup in London, starting July 12.
