Odisha government closes 2,823 schools for low enrollment of students

Bhubaneswar: Odisha government has closed 2,823 schools having an enrollment of 20 or less than 20 students, School and Mass Education Minister Samir Ranjan Dash told the state Assembly Wednesday.

Replying to a question from K Narayana Rao, the Minister said as per the policy of rationalisation and consolidation of schools 2,823 satellite schools having an enrollment of 20 or less than that are consolidated with the nearby lead schools.

The highest numbers of 214 schools were consolidated in Ganjam district followed by Cuttack (180) Kandhamal (173), Koraput (164) Mayurbhanj (157) Jagatsinghpur (144), Jajpur (134) Baragarh (133) Sundargarh (125) and Sambalpur (115).

Not a single school has been consolidated in the Puri district, the Minister said.
