Bhubaneswar: Renowned artist and art critic Jagadish Chandra Kanungo died at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar Wednesday. He was 86.
Kanungo, who had been undergoing treatment for age-related ailments, breathed his last in the morning, family sources said.
A former president of the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi, Kanungo was a prominent figure in Odisha’s cultural and made significant contributions to contemporary art, heritage conservation and art education. Before becoming president of the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi, he served as its secretary for 16 years and played a key role in expanding its activities and outreach.
Kanungo was also widely recognised as an art critic and scholar. He edited the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi’s journal and served as editor of the noted art magazine ‘Ranga Rekha’, which was first published in 1986.
Throughout his career, he was closely associated with exhibitions, workshops and other cultural initiatives aimed at promoting Odisha’s traditional art forms, particularly Pattachitra, while also providing a platform for contemporary artists.
