Odisha weather alert: Low-pressure area likely to form over Bay of Bengal; IMD sounds heavy rainfall warning

Bhubaneswar: The regional centre of IMD in Bhubaneswar in its weather alert of July 18 said that a cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal Odisha. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form northwest Bay of Bengal over next 48 hours.

The weather agency also issued an Orange Warning for heavy rainfall in several districts of Odisha.

Upto 8.30 AM of July 19: As per the Orange Warning (be prepared), heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at one or two places over Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur and Kalahandi districts.

Impact and action suggested for Orange Warning:-

  1. Temporarily water logging is likely in low-lying areas.
  2. Poor visibility during intense spells of rain and traffic congestion in urban areas.
  3. Possibility of wall collapse of vulnerable kutcha houses.
  4. Traffic advisory may be seen for movement in your destination.
  5. Arrangements for drainage of excess water from nursery bed and preparations for sowing of paddy crops may be done.

As per the Yellow Warning (be updated), heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at one or two places over Nuapada, Bolangir, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam and Puri districts.

In the same timeframe, light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at most places over the districts of south Odisha and at many places over the districts of north Odisha.

From 8.30 AM of July 19 to 8.30 AM of July 20: As per the Yellow Warning (be updated), heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at one or two places over Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nuapada, Nayagarh, Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal and Angul districts.

In the same time frame, light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at most places over the districts of south interior Odisha and at many places over the remaining districts of the state.

In Bhubaneswar, for the next 24 hours, rain or thundershower towards the afternoon or evening is predicted by IMD. Maximum and minimum temperatures are very likely to be around 34 degree Celsius and 25 degree Celsius respectively.

In the last 24 hours, the highest maximum temperature of 34.4 degree Celsius was recorded at Chandbali while the lowest minimum temperature of 21.0 degree Celsius was recorded at Nabarangpur, the weather alert of July 18 informed.
