Bhubaneswar: The regional centre of IMD in Bhubaneswar Tuesday said that Southwest Monsoon has been subdued over Odisha.

The agency in its afternoon weather bulletin released Tuesday issued no advisories for the period August 10-13. Besides, it issued a Yellow Warning only for a few districts till August 10 that are expected to experience thunderstorm with lightning with no clear mention about ‘heavy rainfall’ that usually dominates its bulletins.

Although the agency says that ‘light to moderate rain or thundershowers are very likely to occur at a few places’ in the state, it may clearly not be enough for farmers who were experiencing drought-like situations in several parts of Odisha including western and southern Odisha.

The extreme rainfall activity experienced in the state last week — especially in the coastal and western belt — has inundated very large patches of paddy fields where rice is the primary crop for most farmers at this time of year.

The extreme rainfall and scant likely rains, combined, might be a recipe for disaster for many farmers who are already struggling under loan burden as alleged in several farmer suicide cases reported from western Odisha this year.

Meanwhile. the agency has issued the Yellow Warning for these districts.

Upto 8.30 AM of August 9: As per the Yellow Warning (be updated), thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places over Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Ganjam districts.

In the same timeframe, light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at a few places over the districts of Odisha.

From 8.30 AM of August 9 to 8.30 AM of August 10: As per the Yellow Warning (be updated), thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places over Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Malkangiri, Koraput, Gajapati and Ganjam districts.

In the same timeframe, light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at a few places over the districts of Odisha.

In Bhubaneswar, for the next 24 hours, a generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershower is predicted by IMD. Maximum and minimum temperatures are very likely to be around 34 degree Celsius and 25 degree Celsius respectively.

In the last 24 hours, the highest maximum temperature of 33.5 degree Celsius was recorded at Nayagarh while the lowest minimum temperature of 22.5 degree Celsius was recorded at Nabarangpur, the bulletin informed.
