Bhadrak: A woman’s body was exhumed two days after her death and brought to Bhadrak district headquarters hospital Saturday for a post-mortem examination after her family suspected that she and her husband may have died of snakebite, sources said.
Pramila Barik of Tiadi Sahi in Ishwarpur under Tihidi block fell ill Thursday morning. She reportedly developed symptoms including blurred vision and a dry mouth. Her family took her to Bhadrak district headquarters hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Her body was subsequently cremated, the sources added.
That night, her husband, Permananda Barik, was sleeping at home. He developed similar symptoms Friday morning and fell seriously ill. He was initially taken to Tihidi hospital and later admitted to Bhadrak district headquarters hospital. As his condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to Kataka. However, he died on the way, the sources informed.
Permananda’s body was kept at Bhadrak district headquarters hospital for post-mortem examination.
The family later suspected that both deaths could have been caused by snakebite because the couple had reportedly shown similar symptoms. According to Pramila’s brother-in-law, the family’s mud house is surrounded by floodwater and there are several holes in the bedroom, raising concerns that a snake could have entered the house, the sources added.
After informing police, the family exhumed Pramila’s body and took it to Bhadrak district headquarters hospital for a post-mortem examination. The exact cause of her death is expected to be established through the examination, the sources said.
