Baripada: A team of officials from the Odisha State Commission for Women (SCW) led by its chairperson Minati Behera, visited the family of the lecturer who had committed suicide after she was allegedly raped by a relative in Rairangpur in Mayurbhnaj district.
It has been alleged that she had committed suicide after her complaint was ignored by police at Jharpokharia.
Dr Behera was accompanied by Women Commission officials, and executive officer Arabinda Patnaik, Mayurbhanj Superintendent of Police Smit P Parmar, ASP Bijaya Barwa and a three-member team. They talked to the members of the victim’s family. While talking to the victim’s family, the team assured them justice.
Later, they inspected the victim’s hostel room where she had committed suicide.
Dr Behera said a detailed report shall be submitted to the State government while necessary steps will be taken in this direction.
Notably, the victim was a physics lecturer at Rairangpur Women’s College and used to stayed in the hostel.
However, she had lodged a complaint October 30, alleging rape by her relative at Rairangpur Town Police Station. She hanged herself in her hostel room December 1. Her family accused the police of inaction.
After the allegation by victim’s family, SP Parmar arrested the main accused. He also transferred Jharpokharia IIC Sarat Chandra Mahalik to district police headquarters and suspended investigating officer of the case Prasant Kumar Swain.
