Puri: Nearly 22 days after a former councillor and Mahila Samiti president Satyabhama Behera was shot at, Baseli Sahi police Monday arrested one person in connection with the crime.
The arrested was identified as Bikash Behera, a resident of Gokha Sahi. He was nabbed from Manglaghat bypass road on Puri-Bhubaneswar national highway late Sunday night. The police seized a motorcycle from his possession.
However, three other accused involved in the firing are still at large. The police refused to divulge whether they have elicited any clues from Behera about the whereabouts of the absconding accused.
Inspector-in-charge Jaydeep Mohanty said efforts were on to trace the locations. Meanwhile, grapevines have it that the accused trio has left the state.
Earlier, the supporters of the female leader had demonstrated in front of the office of director general of police protesting failure of police in arresting the accused.
Notably, Satyabhama was sweeping the verandah of her house April 21, 2018 evening when four miscreants reached there on two bikes and fired eight rounds of bullets at her. While five bullets missed the target, two bullets hit her left abdomen and one at her thigh. The locals had fled the spot before the locals rushed to the spot.
Satyabhama was initially rushed to the district headquarters hospital and latter shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. The police had recovered five bullets from the crime scene.
On the basis of a complaint lodged by Satyabhama’s daughter-in-law, police had registered a case under relevant sections of IPC and Arms Act.
