Manish Kumar, currently principal correspondent with Orissa POST, received the ‘Statesman Award for Rural Reporting 2016’ at a function held at Kala Mandir in Kolkata Friday. He was selected for the third spot of the annual award instituted by the Statesman Group for a series of articles which appeared in this daily during April–May, 2015.
The award for the first position went to Priyanka Kakodkar, a journalist with ‘The Times of India’, Mumbai, and that for the second place went to Mini Thomas from ‘The Week’.
Manish was selected for the award for his extensive coverage of dying traditional art forms of Orissa and portraying the plight of rural artistes of the state.
As a reporter with the city desk, Manish had toured several rural areas in the state and reported widely on traditional art forms.
His reports included those on Dhokra artistes of Sadeiberini, Papier Mache artistes of Karadagadia in Khurda, weavers of Nuapatna, bell metal craftsmen of Kantilo and textile workers of Raghurajpur and Dandasahi.
Former editor in chief of ‘The Hindu’ Siddharth Vardharajan, editor in chief of ‘Outlook’ Krishna Prasad and other senior journalists were present at the awards ceremony.
