Bhubaneswar, July 16: With the legislation of the Orissa Open University Act, the university has decided to open regional centres and study centres at different government-aided colleges in all districts.
The study centres will be opened as per the provisions of the Orissa Open University Act, which came into force last June 10, higher education official sources said. The higher education department has sought infrastructure and other logistic support from the college authorities for the functioning of the centres.
The department has asked the government-aided colleges to provide rent-free space of 1200-1500 square feet with at least three rooms to set up regional centres. It has also sought approximately 800-1500 sq ft space with three or four rooms for study centres at their respective colleges.
Besides, the faculty and the non-teaching staff, the study centres will use colleges premises and execute open university work through payment, sources informed. The Orissa Open University Bill, 2014 was passed by the Assembly in December last. A Gazette notification was issued in June in this connection.
The university to be set up at Sambalpur will provide opportunities for higher education in remote areas having no access to institutional education, dropout students and in-service people.
Subjects such as social science, humanities, science and technology, education (continuing and extension), business and management studies, healthcare studies, computer and information sciences and agriculture will be taught in the university.
