Bhubaneswar, Dec 18: Even if state cabinets decided to cancel allotment of a total 1791 plots and houses made under discretionary quota since January 1995 and initiate vigilance probe into the multiple allotments of plots and flats under various schemes is being lauded by the ruling party leaders,
The state cabinet’s decision to cancel allotment of 1,791 plots and houses made under discretionary quota since January 1995 and initiate vigilance probe into multiple allotments of plots and flats under various schemes has got lukewarm response from opposition party members.
“It would have been better, had the government ordered an inquiry to the matter by an independent agency instead of Vigilance,” said Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra of the Congress.
“This government is known for not implementing its decision. We hope this time it would execute the decision in a letter and spirit rather than putting it just on pen and paper,” he said. “Mere cancellation of allotments is not enough. The guilty should be punished under criminal cases,” he said.
The newly appointed president of the Orissa Pradesh Congress Committee, Prasad Harichandan, said that the state government had no other option except to initiate a probe.
“The probe into this matter is not acceptable until the state government allows an independent agency to inquire into it,” said senior BJP leader Bijay Mohapatra. Party sources revealed that Mohapatra will hold a meeting in this regard Friday.
However, BJD spokesperson Samir Dash refuted the charges leveled by the opposition. “The opposition is criticising the decision without reason. The decision of state cabinet is significant and has proved that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has zero tolerance towards law breakers.”
Law minister Arun Sahu termed it a ‘historic’ decision and appreciated the efforts of the task force and thanked the Chief Minister for accepting Task force’s recommendation.
