Bhubaneswar, Sept 23: Hosts Orissa boys’ and girls’ finished third in their respective categories of the All India Junior National Rugby Championships, which concluded at the Kalinga Stadium here Wednesday.
In the boys’ championship, Orissa got the better of Maharashtra 31-10 in the third-fourth play-off game. West Bengal emerged champions by edging out Delhi 8-7 in a keenly-contested final. Tamil Nadu boys bagged fifth place, while Andhra Pradesh finished sixth.
In the girls’ championship, Orissa also secured the third place thrashing Delhi 17-1. West Bengal spanked Maharashtra 42-0 to clinch the title. Bihar and Uttar Pradesh bagged the fifth and sixth positions respectively. Earlier Orissa were beaten by ultimate champions West Bengal 33-12 in the semifinals. The Orissa eves were no match for their West Bengal counterparts. The Bengal eves took the lead early on and completely dominated proceedings during the entire duration of the match.
Chinmay loses
Chninmay Pradhan of Orissa lost to Sasi Kumar Mukund in the second round of the India F15 Futures tennis tournament at Madurai, Wednesday. Chinmay was not at his elements and went down 1-6, 4-6 in straight sets.
After losing the first set disastrously, the Orissa lad tried to put up some resistance in the second set. However, he was broken in the ninth game and that proved crucial.
Double whammy
Bhubaneswar emerged champions, both in the boys’ and the girls’ categories of the All Orissa School Level Basketball Championships, which concluded at Berhampur, Wednesday. In the boys’ final, Bhubaneswar triumphed over Cuttack 26-09 while in the girls’ summit clash, Bhubaneswar scraped past Ganjam 22-18.
