Bhubaneswar, Sept 17: Orissa bagged two bronze medals in the Sub-junior National Karate Championship at the Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi, Thursday.
In the U-13 girls’ kata segment, Saranya Roy secured third position to win the bronze while in the U-13 girls’ fight category, Swagatika Sahu emulated Saranya’s feat. By the dint of their performances both qualified for the Commonwealth Karate Championships.
Rutuparna enters final
Second seed Rutuparna Choudhury of Orissa entered the final of the U-14 girls’ singles event in the Falcon Super Series tennis tournament after thrashing fifth seed Prerna V Vichare of Maharashtra 6-0, 6-3 in their semifinal encounter at the Kalinga Stadium here Thursday.
She will meet third seed Trisha P Vinod of Kerala in the final. Trisha triumphed over top seed Mubashira A Shaik of Andhra Pradesh 6-2, 7-5.
Team leaves
A 16- member Orissa U-19 women’s cricket team departed for Jharkhand, Thursday, to participate in the East Zone Women’s ODI cricket tournament September 20-28. Rashmita Mohanty will accompany the team as the coach. The team was selected on the basis of the players’ performance in a selection trial camp at KIIT. Besides Orissa Jharkhand, Tripura, Assam and Bengal are taking part in this tournament.
