Orissa players dominate show

Bhubaneswar, Jan 14: In what can be called a record-breaking day for Orissa tennis, four players of the state entered the finals of the different age categories in the AITA C7 tournament in Kolkata, Thursday.
Ameek Kiran Batth and Amrutjoy Mohanty made it to the summit clash round of the boys’ and girls’ under-14 categories while Rutuparna Chowdhury and Avilash Mishra reached the title round of the under-18 boys’ and girls’ segments. The icing on the cake came when Abhishek Mohapatra and Amrutjay won the boys’ under-14 doubles title with a facile 6-0, 6-3 victory over the West Bengal pair of Aman Wasim and Anurag. Incidentally all the players are students of the Farhan Ali tennis academy in the city.
In the under-14 girls’ semifinal played at the BTA courts in Salt Lake, talented Ameek made mincemeat of Swarnali Ghosh of West Bengal 6-0, 6-1 while in the boys’ clash of the same age segment Amrutjoy defeated Kritanta Sharma of Assam by an identical scoreline.
In the girls’ under-18 tie Rutuparna defeated Megha Roy of West Bengal 6-4, 6-0. The West Bengal girl after putting up a fight in the first set was blown away by the Orissa lass in the set. Avilash also had it easy in his match against Ishan Tibrewal winning 2&2.
