Bhubaneswar: Orissa powerlifters put up a sterling show to win 9 medals including three gold, four silver and two bronze medals in the recently concluded 42nd National Powerlifting Championsghips at Alleppey, Kerala.
In the women’s category Laxmi Devi, Chandrabadani and Sangeeta won gold medals, while Anupama and Priyadarshini bagged silver medals. Rupali clinched a bronze medal. With six medals in their kitty Orissa women’s team emerged champions in their category.
Orissa men’s powerlifters couldn’t emulate their female counterparts as they would have liked to. However they had to be satisfied with three medals. Sangram Behera and Md Javed bagged two silver medals, while Md Abid clinched a bronze medal. The men’s team finished second runners-up in their categories.
Devi Singh was adjudged the Strong Woman of India first runners-up, while Chandrabadani Mohanty bagged the second runners-up award. Saroj Kumar Das was the coach of the Orissa team while Lohit Kishore Bal was the manager for the competition.
Orissa team members were given a grand welcome by the members of Orissa Powerlifting Association upon their arrival at the city Tuesday.
