Orissa suffer fifth successive reverse

Bhubaneswar, Dec 18: The spin trio Chiranjit Paul (3/34), Rajesh Barik (3/35) and Swapan Das (2/25) bowled brilliantly in tandem to help Tripura beat Orissa by 37 runs in a Vijay Hazare Trophy encounter at the Palam Ground in New Delhi, Friday. It was Orissa’s fifth consecutive defeat after having won the opener against Vidarbha.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss on a pitch that deteriorated as the game progressed, Tripura scored 206 in 49.2 overs losing all their wickets in the process. However, Orissa fared no better and were bowled out for 169 in 44.3 overs to lose the game tamely.
Tripura after losing two early wickets rode on a third-wicket stand of 90 runs between Parminder Singh (65 retd hurt, 104b, 7×4) and SM Singha (56, 94b, 5×4). Some late order hitting by Swapan (23, 25b, 3×4) and SS Majumdar (31, 28b, 3×4) took their total past the 200-run mark. Basant Mohanty, Biplab Samantray and Deepak Behera picked up two wickets each for Orissa.
When Orissa batted, they continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. Anurag Sarangi (23), Biplab (23), Govind Poddar (17), Aravind Singh (27) and Deepak (29) – all had starts but failed to consolidate. A few of them fell to poor shots against the spinners when a bit of caution could have easily turned things around for Orissa. But then that was not to be.
Brief scores
Tripura 206 in 49.2 overs (Parminder Singh 65, SM Singha 56, Deepak Behera 2/26) beat Orissa 169 in 44.3 overs (Deepak Behera 29, Chiranjit Paul 3/34, Rajesh Barik 3/35) by 37 runs.
