Bhubaneswar: Popular Oriya Singer Susmita Das has been appointed member of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Das, with a singing career spanning over a decade, said she was “feeling on top of the world” as the appointment was unexpected.
Das said she was still to understand what her job at CBFC would be, but added: “Apart from the core group that gives certification to movies, the other members, including me, will be required to meet five times in a year.”
She told Orissa POST that audiences in the country were mature now and as a board member she would be “fine with ‘kissing-scenes’ in a movie if it forms part of the story”. “Nowadays, expression of love in public is ok, isn’t it?” Das said.
She said she won’t be prejudiced in judging content of movies and won’t as moral police. However, she believed that Censor Board should be there as lot of movies are product of sleazy stuff, which are made to sell and not watch.
On the audiences’ reactions online after Sceptre, the James Bond movie released with censorship on kissing scenes, Das said she hadn’t watched the movie. She added that she liked Bond movies and has enjoyed them.
Speaking of award wapsi, the singer said she didn’t believe in returning awards as writers in the country have been doing to mark protest against growing intolerance. “It’s a very subjective issue. But, I don’t believe that it’s the right way. Awards are pats on your back to appreciate your work. One should respect it and not return it.”
She said it’s only recently that people have been talking about saffronisation of the censor board which most likely was a creation of the media or a phenomenon of hyperactive social media users. “I still believe there is enough space of creative works of artists without being hindered by the state.”
