Bhubaneswar, April 14: The Sikh community in the city Tuesday celebrated Baisakhi with much fanfare at their Gurdwara situated in Kharvel Nagar in the city. Several programmes were organised on the premises of their sacred edifice in order to celebrate the first day of Baisakh.
The Gurdwara administration Tuesday was overwhelmed by the response they got from the people of the city. More than 2,500 devotees thronged the venue in order to pay tributes to the Khalsa Panth. Baisakhi is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of Khalsa Panth. Guru Gobind Singh, the Tenth Guru of the Sikhs, founded the Khalsa Panth in 1699 by baptizing five of his followers who are called the Punj Pyare (beloved ones).
Guruka Langar was also organised in order to serve the devotees who thronged the venue to pay their tribute to their religious leaders. According to estimates, around 2,000 devotees took part in the langar at their venue.
“We are overwhelmed at the response that we have got from the people of the city. Around 3,500 visitors thronged our site in order to pay their tributes to the Almighty. It is a proud day for the people of Orissa as one of the Punj Pyare belonged to Puri,” Gurudwara secretary Jaspal Singh said.
Gurbani was also recited at the Gurdwara for devotees who were present there. “I always make sure to visit Gurdwara during Baisakhi festival to pay my respects to our religious figures. It gives me immense pleasure to come here to celebrate the day and take part in different events like Langar and Gurbani. It gives me a great sense of satisfaction,” said Mann Singh, a businessman based in the city.
