Puri: The Orissa Sahitya Akademi has constituted a committee headed by its president to correct mistakes spotted in the third edition of Bhakti poet Atibadi Jagannath Das’s treatise Srimad Bhagabat.
The committee includes Gaurang Charan Das, Sarat Chandra Ratha, Debendra Kumar Das and Surendra Kumar Mishra, research officer at Sri Jagannath Sanskrit University in the holy city here, according to Akademi sources. The secretary of the Akademi has been named the convenor of the committee.
“The committee will first find out the mistakes in Srimad Bhagabat and then take corrective measures. The first meeting of the committee will be held soon,” Akademi production officer Rabi Ray said.
The Akademi plans to compare the third edition of Srimad Bhagabat with the first edition of the treatise to find out the discrepancies, sources said.
“Earlier, we had decided to bring out 10,000 copies of the treatise in the third edition. The printing process has been suspended after the detection of mistakes,” Ray said.
The Sahitya Akademi had printed the first edition of Bhagabat in 1989-93 to popularise the classical text, according to sources. Its low cost and attractive layout had become popular among Oriya book lovers. The second edition was printed in 2006. However, the compilation of the 12 volumes of Srimad Bhagabat in 2013 was made available to all Bhagabat Tungis by the state culture department.
However, several howlers were spotted in the third volume of the scripture much to the chagrin of senior citizens who have urged Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to stop the sale and distribution of the controversial edition.
Chakradhar Mahapatra of Jagamara in Bhubaneswar wrote on the issue to Puri collector and a copy of the letter was also sent to the Satlahadi Mutt, where the Atibadi poet authored the scripture.
