Paradip: In what can be termed as a major achievement for Paradip port, it successfully handled 27 cargo ships within 24 hours starting Saturday 6 am. The number is said to be an all- time high.
The port broke its own record created last year. The previous record was 24 ships anchored within 24 hours December 3.
Confirming the achievement, harbour master Alekh Charan Sahu said these vessels anchored at 16 berths out of the 17.
Sources said, due to Titli cyclone, signal 9 was hoisted at the port. Under Titli’s impact, the sea had been turbulent for three days, bringing marine activities to a virtual halt.
With the cyclone having crossed Odisha, port activities were again back to normalcy and the operation started Saturday 6 am with one ship sailing out, port sources said adding within 20 hours ending Sunday 3 am, 27 ships dropped anchor here.
Giving credit to the hard work and dedication of the employees, Sahu also thanked the marine department. “But for the marine department’s cooperation, the feat could not have been achieved,” he said.
Paradip port has been recognised as the second largest in the country handling 105 million MT of cargo. “Other things being equal, the port will become number 1 in the nation within the next 2 years’ time,” the port administration claimed.
