Paradip, Feb 7: Indian Coast Guard here Saturday added a fast patrolling
vessel ‘Amogh’ to its fleet of five
existing ships to guard 480 km eastern coast of the state Saturday.
The ship on its arrival at the Coast Guard berth in Paradip port was given a rousing welcome by the Coast
Guard jawans.
The indigenously-designed ship was built in Cochin shipyard and was
commissioned by defense minister Manohar Parrikar at Goa January 19, said port deputy conservator Captain Gouri Prasad Biswal and Coast Guard commandant (JG) Avatar Singh on its arrival here Saturday. Earlier, five ships Sarojini Naidu, Razia Sultana, Bajra, Charlie 425 and Charlie 426 have been inducted into the Coast Guard.
The induction of ‘Amogh’ will be a major milestone for Indian Coast Guard in augmenting its capabilities and
presence as well as strengthening security in the sea areas of the state’s coast. ‘Amogh’ means unfailing and has the
latest state-of-the-art communication and navigational equipment.
The ship is 50 metres long and has gross registered tonnage of 421 tonne and is propelled by state-of-the-art diesel engine. With a jet propulsion system, it has a maximum speed of 35 knots
(63 kmph), Singh said.
The ship, apart from strengthening coastal security, will help in checking sea pollution, protection of Olive Ridley turtles, and in rescue and relief
operations during natural calamities like floods and cyclone, he added.
