Bhubaneswar: Payal Baral of Orissa clinched a gold medal in the IIIrd South Asian Karate Championships at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium in New Delhi, Saturday.
The Utkal Karate School student, Payal won the yellow metal in the junior kata event. Payal had qualified for the event after emerging champion in the National Junior Karate Championships. She had also won a silver medal in the Commonwealth Championships earlier in the year.
NFC thrash JAA
Nabajyoti Football Club (NFC) thrashed Jadupur Athletic Association (JAA) 3-0 in a match of the 13th Gati Krushna Memorial Football League here Saturday.
Pravat Majhi opened the account for the winners in the seventh minute. He went on to double the lead three minutes before the breather. After the change of ends Rajesh Nayak found the back of the net in the 53rd minute to complete the rout.
Tech Mahindra will meet Gopabandhu Youth Association, while Oriental Warriors will face Gita College in matches, Sunday.
Wall climbing event
In a first of its kind in the state, the Wall Climbing Championship was inaugurated at the Utkal Karate School here Saturday by the, state sports and youth affairs director Ananta Kishore Jena. One hundred thirty participants in four categories from different parts of the state are participating in the two-day tournament.
Football tourney
Football Association of Orissa (FAO) will organise the All India Bhutia Memorial Women’s football tournament at the Biju Patnaik Sports Complex at Angul, starting Sunday. Four teams from the state, and the same number from outside of it will participate in the event.
OOA elections
Orissa Olympic Association (OOA) will select its members in its AGM at Cuttack, September 30. All the participants have to file their nominations by Sunday. “Eleven official members and 11 council members will be elected to various posts,” OOA stated through a press release Saturday.
