Baripada/Balasore: Heavy rains have caused many rivers in North Odisha to swell above the danger marks. Meanwhile, some pockets in Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar witnessed water-logging and flood-like situation, reports said.
Incessant rains triggered by a low-pressure over the Bay of Bengal have left several low-lying areas submerged in Baripada municipality of Mayurbhanj district Wednesday. Ganghar river is in spate. A woman was said to be swept away in the river.
Heavy rain affected normal life in the town while communication was completely snapped in some areas. Meanwhile, a house collapsed in Madhuban Talasahi Wednesday morning.
Reports said Jarali and Sarali canals flowing through the town swelled up following the heavy downpour. This led the floodwater to enter the town causing severe inconvenience to residents. Flood water from Budhabalanga also entered riverside areas of the town including Madhuban Talasahi forcing 20 families to evacuate.
Reports from Balasore said, due to heavy rains, the water level in Subarnarekha river is swelling. Scores of villages along the river and low-lying areas under Bhograi, Jaleswar blocks were panicked over flood situation amid heavy rains.
The administration is keeping a close watch on the situation. Jharkhand is likely to release water from Galudihi and another dam.
