Paradip: Plain clothes policemen from Andhra Pradesh had to face the wrath of people at Paradipgada village in Paradip due to a misunderstanding. This happened when the AP cops were about to arrest a man over a cheque bounce case Saturday.
Unaware that they were cops, locals detained the police officials for hours and asked them to produce their identities. The villagers alleged that the police officials indulged in unsavoury activities.
Although, the officials were carrying a warrant against the accused—Tapas Maharath, locals did not allow them to arrest him.
As the cops arrived in the village in plain clothes, villagers suspected them to be miscreants and thrashed them. The identity of the Andhra police team was revealed after the villagers handed them over to Paradip Lock police station officials.
Sources said the five-member police team from Andhra Pradesh had reached Paradipgarh to execute a warrant pending against Maharath. However, the locals alleged, the police team forcibly barged into Maharath’s house increasing their suspicion.
The entire incident, however, turned into a controversy after Maharath’s family levelled attempt to rape charges against the police team and lodged a complaint at Lock police station. As per latest reports, the Andhra Police also filed a counter case against Maharath’s family members.
“As the cops were in plain clothes, the villagers could not recognise them. Mistaking the officials as miscreants, the locals detained them and subsequently handed them over to the police,” Paradip police said.
However, things have been sorted out now. The cheque bounce accused will be handed over to the cops as per the warrant, a local senior police officer said.
