PGI 2.0 report: Odisha school education degrades

Bhubaneswar: Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2.0 report published by the Ministry of Education for the year 2021-22 showed that Odisha has dropped to 24th spot from its previous rank of 10.

Odisha had secured the 10th position with an overall score of 877 in PGI report published in the year 2020-21. However, in the 2021-22 report, the state has slipped to 24th rank with a score of 517.1.

With this, Odisha has underperformed as compared to its neighbouring states of Jharkhand and West Bengal.

In PGI 2.0 report, the state has been kept under ‘Akanshi-2’ grade.

In the PGI 2021-22 report, the district-wise data shows that only one district from Odisha i.e. Khurdha was featured on the ‘Atti-Uttam’ grade list.

As many as 24 districts of Odisha were graded ‘Uttam’ such as Cuttack, Nuapada, Nayagarh, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Sundergarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Puri, Balasore, Baragarh, Jharsuguda, Dhenkanal, Kendrapara, Ganjam, Kalahandi, Malkangiri, Bolangir, Subarnapur, Keonjhar, Koraput, Deogarh and Gajapati.

Besides, districts such as Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Boudh, Rayagada and Mayurbhanj were graded under the ‘Prachesta-1’ category.

Notably, Chandigarh, Punjab, Delhi, Kerala and Maharashtra have bagged the top spots in the report.

It can be mentioned here that the Ministry of Education assesses the performance of the school education system at the state and union territory (UT) levels by creating an index for comprehensive analysis.

The PGI structure comprises a total weightage of 1,000 points across 73 indicators.

Based on acquired points, states and UTs in PGI 2.0 have been classified into various grades.

The highest grade is ‘Daksh’ and the lowest is ‘Akanshi-3’.

None of the states/UTs has attained the Daksh grade.

The best grade attained in PGI 2.0 is ‘Prachesta–2’, in which the score range is between 641 and 700. Punjab and Chandigarh have managed to feature on the Prachesta–2 list.

As many as six states and UTs joined the list of ‘Prachesta–3’ grade which has a score range of 581-640.

There are 13 states and UTs which were graded under ‘Akanshi-1’ (score range 521-580) and 12 states and UTs were placed in ‘Akanshi–2’ grade list (score range 461-520).

The remaining three states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Mizoram were listed in ‘Akanshi–3’ grade in PGI 2.0.
