Bhubaneswar: The Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) Monday announced results of the annual Plus II Science stream. However, the pass percentage dropped by over 4 per cent this year compared to last year’s.

In fact, the Science stream pass percentage was the lowest in past five years. A total of 72.33 per cent of 97,750 students cleared the annual higher secondary (Plus-II) science examination, school and mass education minister Samir Ranjan Dash said.
Of the 97,750 students, who appeared for the examination this time, 70,716 have passed, he said. Last year, the pass percentage was 76.98 per cent while it was 81.11 per cent in 2017, 80.8 per cent in 2016 and 80.31 per cent in 2015.
As many 20,806 students (29.42 per cent) secured first division while 23,904 (33.81 per cent) got second division. Similarly, 25,360 (35.87 per cent) students passed the examination in third division while 636 students cleared the compartmental examination, the minister said.
Out of a total number of students who cleared the examination, 60 among boys secured 90 per cent and above marks compared to 41 students last year, he stated.
The minister also said that the boys outnumbered the girls in the examination this year. As against 40,058 (70.4 per cent) boys, 30,648 (75.69 per cent) girls have passed.
However, in the percentage wise marks, girls have secured more (75.02 per cent) than boys (70.04 per cent). Last year, 42,886 boys cleared the test while 30,325 girls had passed the examination.
Balasore district has topped with most number of successful candidates with 86.56 per cent students of the district clearing the examination while Gajapati was at the bottom with a pass percentage of only 36.20 per cent. Nine colleges have got nil results while 29 have got cent per cent results.
Asked about the reason behind the drop in pass percentage, the minister said installation of CCTV surveillance at nearly 99 per cent of the examination centres may be the reason behind the fall in pass percentage. He also assured that action will be taken against the institutions which has registered zero result. A total of 3.69 lakh students comprising 2.35 lakh students in Arts, 97,750 students in Science and around 27,200 students in Commerce stream had appeared for the examinations.
The results of the Arts and Commerce streams will be declared by June second week, CHSE chairman Amarendra Kumar Patnaik said.
