PM to dedicate new IIT campus to the nation

BHUBANESWAR: Directors of Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar (IIT-B) and Indian Institute of Science education and Research, Behrampur (IISER) announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would inaugurate the new campus of IIT-B and lay foundation stone for a permanent campus of IISER December 24, at a joint press conference here Thursday.

Director, IIT-B, R V Rajakumar and Director, IISER, K V R Chary also said that the PM would be accompanied by Governor of Odisha Ganeshi Lal, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, shipping and water resources, river development and Ganga rejuvenation Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar, Minister of tribal affairs Jual Oram Minister of Tribal affairs and Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan among others.

Director, IISER, K V R Chary said, “The Indian Institute of Science education and Research (IISER) Berhampur is the youngest among the seventh ISSER’s present in the country. It proposes to expand and diversify its mission of carrying out science in the education system of the country along with highest quality of research. It also looks forward to train young students to address the challenges of the 21st century. The important objective of the new campus is to enhance IISER Berhampur’s contribution to the pool of highly skilled scientific manpower in the country who will serve the country for its needs.”

“This institute will augment the national capabilities in all areas of science producing 200 BS-MS students and 100 plus PHD’s of International standard in all areas of science every year. At least 33% percent of seats are available for girl students who want to make it big in the world of science and research,” he added.

Director, IIT-B, R V Rajakumar said, “IIT Bhubaneswar is a fully functional institute with permanent campus and it has seven schools with 1765 students and 149 faculty members. The institute has established five centres of excellence in Augmented and Virtual reality, Energy Materials, Design Innovaton, Bay of Bengal Coastal Observatory and Pro-biotics.”

However, the Unique Selling Point (USP) of the institute is its research and training which has created excellence in national and international levels. The institute has received 81 sponsors and 101 consultancy projects worth of Rupees 55.61 Crore in the last three years. More than 1000 research papers have been published in referred journals and 30 patents have been filed by the institute.

Currently the institute stands tall with an ALL-INDIA ranking of 18 by NIRF, ALL-INDIA 10 and 600-800 worldwide by the world rankings and 107 among BRICS countries by the QS world rankings.

The institute is embarked upon several innovations including recruitment of faculty of foreign origin in addition to Indian Origin to provide education of international flavour to its students. Soon both IIT Bhubaneswar and IISER Berhampur will work together in forthcoming research and training.
