Malkangiri: Panic gripped the residents of Kenduguda in Sindrimal panchayat in this district after two children died of pneumonia within three days. Ten children are reported to be suffering from the fever in the village.
The deceased were Liza Madkami (2), daughter of Sukra Madkami, and Indu Padiami (3), daughter of Deba Padiami.
Liza was admitted to Pandripani primary health centre with fever and doctors shifted her to the district headquarters hospital in Malkangiri after preliminary treatment.
She succumbed on the way while being shifted to the district hospital. Her three-year-old sister Sunali Madkami is undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital.
Similarly, Indu was undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital after being affected by pneumonia. Meanwhile, her family without informing the doctors, sneaked out of the hospital and met a sorcerer at Korukonda. The sorcerer performed some rituals on Indu and the girl died a few minutes later.
Rudra (1), son of Lakshman Madkami, Moti (3) and Tulasi, daughter of Raghu Madkami, Raju (18 months), son of Raghu Madkami, a four-year-old son of Basu Madi, two girls aged about two and a one-year-old and some other children are suffering from the disease.
A medical team from Pandripani health centre visited the village Monday and collected blood samples of affected persons apart from sprinkling bleaching powder and disinfectants in the locality.
The hospital authorities are taking precautions and keeping a close watch on the situation, medical officer Dr Riji Manisha said. The deceased kids were suffering from pneumonia while the others were afflicted with cold and fever, she added.
