Sundargarh: The Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of Biramitrapur Police Station who was produced before the special POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) court Monday was sent to judicial custody till July 18.
Odisha Police’s Crime Branch arrested the IIC July 1 from a forested area in Angul in connection with the sexual assault case involving a minor girl in Sundargarh.
The Crime Branch had taken him on a four-day remand after his arrest with prior permission from a local court. However, the local court had asked the Crime Branch to produce the accused in the POCSO court.
The accused also applied for bail in the POCSO court, but the court has rejected his appeal and sent him to judicial custody. The court also directed the Crime Branch to record the statement of the two witnesses under Section 164 of the CrPC.
As per the allegation, the victim had come to witness a fair at Biramitrapur area March 25 but it was cancelled at the last moment due to the lockdown. The girl failed to return home and was roaming near the bus stand when a police patrolling team saw her and brought her to the police station. Inspector Majhi allegedly raped her on the top floor of the police station. She was dropped at her home the next day. However, she was called to the police station regularly and raped by the inspector and other police officials.
As the minor became pregnant, the cop illegally and forcibly aborted her pregnancy.
Six persons, including the inspector, doctor and the girl’s stepfather, have been named as accused in the FIR.
Kavita Jalan, the deputy inspector general of police (Western Range), is supervising the case.
