New Delhi: The Supreme Court, which heard the contentious Polavaram issue Tuesday and imposed a penalty of Rs 20,000 on the Centre, has asked the Andhra Pradesh government to raise its objections to the application filed by the Orissa government.
“We may note that there is some objection on behalf of learned counsel for the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is open to the learned counsel for the state of Andhra Pradesh to take any objection that it feels appropriate in the written statement,” the court order read.
The court order also clarified that as the Union government is already a party to the case there was no need to make other related Union ministries respondents in the case, a stand taken by the court earlier too. The court also added that the fine of Rs 20,000 scheduled to be paid by the Union government for not responding for more than one year should be utilised for juvenile justice.
The court in its order also castigated the Union government for its lethargic approach to the case. It said, “We find that no reply has been filed for more than a year. There is absolutely no justification for ‘this lethargy’ on the part of the Union of India particularly in a suit between two states.”
The court Tuesday fined the Union government Rs 20,000 for not responding to earlier SC notices and accepted the demand of making the Chhattisgarh and Telangana as parties to the case.
