New Delhi: The Orissa government batted for an amicable solution to the long-standing inter-state dispute over the ambitious Polavaram project during the hearing of the case in the Supreme Court, Tuesday.
The case, filed a decade back in 2007, came up for hearing before a two-judge bench of the apex court comprising Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta where the state government made a submission that it was for an amicable solution through negotiations. Tuesday, senior advocate Gopal Subramanium represented the state in the apex court.
In its submission before the court, the state government detailed how the Polavaram project could affect the prospects of the Orissa and make the population in the adjacent areas of the project vulnerable. In its earlier order, the court had castigated the Centre for its nonchalant approach to the case and had imposed a penalty of Rs 20,000 for the same. The next hearing of the case has been scheduled for February 20, when the other parties will be heard.
Mining case not heard
The case relating to illegal mining in Orissa was not taken up Tuesday as the court was adjourned for Wednesday.
Tuesday, the same bench of the apex court was expected to argue on the merits of the Central Empowered Committee Report (CEC) on the estimates of penalty from the erring miners from Orissa.
During the last hearing, the CEC report was submitted to the court as well as the state, but the mining counsels did not receive the copies of the report. Now, it is expected that the mining counsels would be provided with the report soon. The case is now scheduled to be heard Wednesday before the some bench.
