Berhampur: Even 10 days after the acid attack on a third year DMLT student on MKCG Medical College campus, the police have failed miserably to arrest the culprit.
Special police teams were constituted to track down the accused, but their efforts were in vain. Meanwhile, three investigating officers were transferred in the last 10 days raising doubts about the abilities of the police of both the districts.
Sources said the victim Minati Pradhan of Hinjilicut area had married Niranjan Pradhan six months back. All dowry demands were met at the time of the marriage. Soon after marriage Niranjan and his family demanded more dowry from Minati.
The victim claimed Niranjan tortured her mentally and physically when she expressed her inability to meet his demands.
Minati was a student of Diploma in Medical Laboratory (DMLT) course in Berhampur MKCG College and was staying at the hostel. The incident occurred at around 10:30 am when she was on way to class. Niranjan who was waiting for her threw acid on her and managed to flee.
She was rescued by fellow students and rushed to hospital. She sustained serious burns on her face, neck and limbs. She is now under treatment at a special ward at the Cuttack SCB Medical College and Hospital.
Niranjan who is on the run after the incident has not been arrested. Police have failed to make any arrest even after 10 days. The cops launched a manhunt in and outside the state in vain.
Earlier, Baidyanathpur woman police sub-inspector was directed to carry out the probe. Due to unknown reasons the case was taken from the SI and given to an inspector of the same police station. The inspector met the victim and her parents and recorded their statements at Cuttack SCB. However, she was also removed from the case and the case is now being investigated by an inspector posted at the SP’s office.
