Police launch road safety campaign

Bhubaneswar: The traffic police of Bhubaneswar have launched a special drive against wrong-side driving, which has emerged as a major concern. Under this, a month-long special drive has been planned in the first phase.

Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty said the campaign aimed at preventing driving on pavements and on the wrong-side at major traffic junctions started Friday.

“Wrong-side driving as well as drag racing on public roads is dangerous, illegal and a matter of concern as the lives of the public are endangered,” said Mohanty.

“Following orders from the police commissioner, a special drive was launched Friday. The drive aims to ensure the safety of the public and enforcement will continue in coming days,” said traffic inspector Surendra Bal.

Drawing inspiration from Hindi film actor Akshay Kumar’s latest videos wherein he portrays a traffic cop, the Commissionerate Police has now geared up to strictly enforce road safety guidelines in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.

The National Award winning actor, Akshay, has joined hands with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to spread awareness on traffic rules and road safety in view of the increasing number of road accidents.

The actor launched three videos as part of the Road Safety Week campaign’s theme, ‘Sadak Suraksha Jeevan Raksha’ in the presence of Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari recently.
