Jajpur/Jajpur Town: A local court Monday granted a three-day remand of Rakesh Swain, the prime accused in the murder case of Jharaphula Nayak, a student of RD Women’s University in Bhubaneswar.
The district and sessions court here allowed the Kuakhia police to take Swain on three days remand for interrogation in the case over a prayer filed by the Kuakhia police.
Kuakhia police had earlier prayed before the court for a five-day remand of the accused. During the remand period, the police is likely to question Swain to find out more details pertaining to the death of the girl.
The remand period will start from February 2 and will remain valid till February 4. Probe has been intensified on all aspects of the case and very soon the accused will be arrested, Jajpur Road SDPO Chinmaya Nayak said.
Reports said that the Twin City Commissionerate Police had arrested Swain from his residence at Sundarpada in Bhubaneswar and handed him over to Jajpur police.
Rakesh and Jharaphula had checked into OYO Shiv Sai Guest House, Dharma Vihar in Bhubaneswar and stayed at room no. 201 of the hotel, January 26.
Swain reportedly found Jharaphula in an unconscious state at the hotel room on the morning of January 27 and called up his friend Shekhar seeking his help. While Shekhar drove the scooter, Rakesh rode pillion making the unconscious girl sit between them. They were spotted leaving the place around 7 AM.
Rakesh initially intended to hospitalise Jharaphula at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. He however, realised midway that Jharaphula had died. The two friends rode all the way to Jajpur on the scooter and allegedly dumped the body on roadside around 9 AM.
Kuakhia police in Jajpur district had recovered the body near Mulapal Wednesday last week. Some local residents had spotted the body lying along the Mulapal-Dialakhandi road and informed the Kuakhia police.
