Bolangir: A clash broke out between police and villagers in Biripali village under Bangomunda police limits of Bolangir district when officers tried to rescue a couple, a video of which later went viral on social media.
According to sources, a man from Biripali had earlier lodged a complaint at Bangomunda police station after his minor daughter went missing. During the investigation, police learned that the girl was in a relationship with a youth from the same village. As both belonged to different castes, their families opposed the marriage, prompting the couple to elope.
After the missing complaint was filed, the duo returned and was staying at the youth’s house. Based on information from the girl’s family, a police team went to rescue the couple August 15.

At the time, some agitated villagers attempted to attack the couple by throwing mud and manhandling them. Police personnel were also jostled as they tried to protect the duo, leading to a scuffle between villagers and cops.
Despite the resistance, police managed to safely rescue the couple and bring them to Bangomunda police station. The incident came to light after a video of the confrontation went viral.
Bolangir SP Abhilash G said a case had been registered based on a complaint by the girl’s father and action would be taken against those involved in the attack.
