Jeypore/Dhenkanal, Oct 7: Students of colleges in Jeypore and Dhenkanal went on a rampage after the college authorities rejected nominations Tuesday.
In Jeypore, students of Vikramdev Autonomous College vandalised college property and blocked National Highway-26 after college authorities rejected the nomination of several candidates for the upcoming students’ union elections.
The college authorities suspended classes and called in the police. According to a report, trouble started when the college rejected the nomination of Nihal Samantraya, contestant for union vice-president, on the grounds that he had less than 75 percent attendance.
The students locked gates of the college and damaged the science department and administrative buildings. They also blocked the highway by burning tyres.
Contestants had filed their nominations Monday and the final list was published Tuesday. Six students filed nominations for the post of president, of which four were rejected for shortage in attendance.
Dhenkanal College (Autonomous), in Dhenkanal, also witnessed similar scenes after the college authorities rejected nominations of four aspirants.
Police resorted to a baton charge when the situation spiraled out of control. Later principal Bijaylakshmi Acharya held talks with the DPI and announced cancellation of the student union elections. She also declared the college closed sine die.
