Rourkela, Jan 2: With pollutants being regularly drained into it, the Brahmani river, one of Orissa’s major rivers formed by the confluence of Sankh and South Koel rivers, has been increasingly looking grey, at least here. The consequences of using the polluted river water are becoming evident. People are increasingly complaining of suffering from skin diseases and severe stomach-related problems while using the water for various purposes like bathing.
River Brahmani is located near five sponge iron factories from which sewerage is regularly released into the river water, causing pollution. Locals complain that coal dust can be seen floating on the surface of the river in the morning. Some say that the water level has reduced 2-3 feet and one can find dust from the sponge factories getting accumulated at certain places, especially during summer.
Locals also say that the quantity of fish has reduced drastically as they have died due to the polluted water. Residents say that though they have expressed their dissatisfaction over such facts, no measures have been taken by the authorities to address concerns over pollution in the river to ensure sustainable living conditions.
