Powerlifters bag six medals

Bhubaneswar, Sept 11: Orissa powerlifters bagged six medals including three gold, two silver and one bronze medal in the National Senior Powerlifting Championships at Kashipur, Uttarakhand.

Sanjay Kumar Nayak secured the first position in the men’s 105kg squat to win the yellow metal. He lifted 255kg in benchpress and 180kg in deadlift. In the women’s 47 kg, Laxmi Mani Singh lifted 272kg to take the top honours. Devi Singh lifted 315kg to secure the first position in the women’s 52 kg category.

In the men’s 66kg, Pradipta Patra bagged silver medal, a feat which was matched by Priyadarshini Bisoi in the women’s 72kg segment. In the 83kg men’s category K Dora bagged bronze.

Mixed day

Orissa players had a mixed day at office after completion of the first round of the IVth Keshabananda Das Memorial All India Fide Open rating Chess Championship, which was inaugurated here Friday.

Utkal Ranjan Sahoo, Soumya Ranjan Mishra, Rakesh Kumar Jena, Rakesh Kumar Nayak and Rajesh Nayak registered convincing victories, while Ansuman Samal, Nilsu Patnaik, Rabindra Kumar Ojha, Sambit Panda, Saina Salonika, Smaraki Mohanty and Mahitosh Dey suffered losses against their respective opponents.

Utkal beat D Gukesh of KIIT, while Soumya Ranjan prevailed over M Poojakanth of Maharashtra. Rakesh outwitted Aneek Kamani of West Bengal while Rajesh defeated statemate Amar Kumar Singh. In another tie Rakesh got the better of Trisha Kanyam Aralu of Telangana.
