Bhubaneswar, July 5: Young Oriya swimming sensation Pratyasha Ray bagged a gold medal in the 43rd Junior National Aquatic Championships, July 5-9, at Basanavgudi Swimming Centre in Bangalore, Tuesday. She finished on top in the 100 metres backstroke event with a timing of 1:10.47 seconds. She will feature in four more events, July 7 and 8.
Cuttack emerge champs
Cuttack won the 57th Senior Men’s Sahani Cup football tournament at the VSS Stadium in Sambalpur, Tuesday Cuttack defeated RSP 2-0 in the final.
After a goalless first period, V George Prakash put Cuttack ahead in the 80th minute. Seven minutes later it was the turn of Bikash Chandra Padhiary to strike and ensure an emphatic victory for Cuttack.
In the first half both sides had a number of chances, but failed to utilise them. In the second session, however, it was Cuttack all the way as they attacked right from the start. Their efforts ultimately bore fruit at the fag end of the game with the RSP players tiring after withstanding the Cuttack onslaught for a lengthy period.
Six players score hat-tricks as Orissa rout AP
Cuttack: Orissa eves scripted a thumping 25-0 win over Andhra Pradesh in a match of Junior Girls’ National football championships at the Barabati Stadium here, Tuesday.
Jasmani Samad opened the scoring for the hosts in the fourth minute. Jabamani Tudu (eighth, 13th, 25th, 42nd), Suman Pragyan Mohapatra (14th, 34th, 37th, 58th), Subhadra Sahu (24th, 73th, 77th, 84th) and Laharee Mangaraj (53rd, 60th, 69th, 82nd) scored four goals each including hat-tricks. Arati Sethi (seventh, 17th, 30th) and Anima Malik (19th, 23rd, 55th) hit the target thrice each while Munica Minz (36th) and Subhadra Nayak (79th) struck one apiece for Orissa.
In another contest at Barabati Stadium, Delhi defeated Assam 2-0. Ansushka Samuel (25th) and Mariya Tehreen Khan (41st) scored for Delhi.
Meanwhile, GOA eked out a narrow 3-2 win over Kerala in a keenly-contested game at the Police Ground here. Anline Fernandes (11th), Karishma (49th) and Sushmita Jadav (68th) scored for Goa while V Unnimaya (13th) and ER Reshma (88) struck once each for Kerala.
At the same venue in an earlier game, Mizoram thrashed Chandigarh 4-1.
