Gop: Two precious idols of goddess Durga, valued around `2 lakh, were stolen from Gangeswari temple in Bayalishbati area here in the wee hours of Sunday.
Police said they have registered a case in this connection on the basis of a complaint lodged by the temple’s priest Krushna Chandra Padhi and are investigating into the heist. “Efforts are on to trace the hoodlums and recover the ashtadhatu (an alloy of gold, silver, copper, mercury, zinc, lead, tin and iron) idols at the earliest,” Gop inspector in-charge (IIC) Ranjan Kumar Pradhan said.
According to the complaint lodged with Gop police, some miscreants had decamped with the idols of goddess Durga weighing around 20 kilograms. The temple authorities spotted the idols missing and approached the police Sunday morning.
“The idols were several centuries’ olds and had been worshipped as live icons of goddess Durga,” Padhi pointed out, adding, the incident has sent shockwaves in the area.
