Lanjigarh: A pregnant tribal woman was brought to a government hospital here in a sling from her village located eight km away as there is no road connectivity to her village.
The incident occurred on the occasion of International Women’s Day Tuesday at Birsinger village under this block in Kalahandi district. The woman was identified as Jamuna Majhi.
The sight of Jamuna’s husband Patra and her father-in-law carrying her in a sling to the hospital not only shocked many but exposed the state of healthcare services in the interior pockets of the state.
According to reports, the woman’s husband walked about four km to reach Banigaon to inform ASHA worker Golapi Naik about his wife’s labour pains. Though Naik tried her best to contact 102 and 108 ambulances to take the pregnant woman to a nearby hospital, nobody responded to her calls. Seeing Jamuna writhing in pain, Patra and his father carried Jamuna in a sling and walked all the way to the hospital where she delivered a baby.
“It is unfortunate that such incidents are occurring in remote pockets of the state even as the world celebrated Women’s Day,” said a hospital staffer requesting anonymity. PNN
