Bhubaneswar: The in-laws of a newly-wed woman Tuesday allegedly killed her for dowry in Bhimatangi area under the Airfield police station limits.
The woman, who was strangled to death by the in-laws, was severely beaten which could be easily ascertained from the tell-tale assault marks on all her body parts.
The family members of the victim also alleged that the landlord and his wife were also involved in the gruesome murder. A complaint has been lodged with the police by the mother of the deceased woman.
She was identified as Shilpi Dash, 32, of Bangali Sahi area under Laxmisagar Police station limits. Her husband, Sudhir, originally belongs to Medinapur of West Bengal. Sudhir, along with his family, has been staying in Bhimatangi and works as an event manager in a city-based company. Shilpi Dash fell in love with Sudhir a few years back and later got married with the consent of both the families on 13th December, 2017. She was three months pregnant.
Her family failed to give sufficient dowry as they were very poor. Shilpi’s in-laws often beat her and also put pressure on her to abort her child. They had given her an ultimatum to either bring dowry or abort pregnancy.
Shilpi allegedly revealed before her parents about the torture she had been going through. However, parents assured her that everything would be normal once she gave birth to the child.
Meanwhile, the frequency of torture had increased with Sudhir developing an illicit relationship with the landlady, alleged Shilpi’s mother. Monday, Shilpi informed the family members about the torture. They came to her residence at 7.30 in the evening. However, her in-laws did not allow them to meet Shilpi and told them that she was admitted to a private hospital at Cuttack Road. The family alleged that Shilpi was dead before their visit.
Later, they were informed that dead Shilpi was at the Capital Hospital. Police arrested Sudhir after registering a case (CS No.276/18) under Sections 498,402,302,303 and 34 of the IPC.

Bhubaneswar: The mutilated body of a man was recovered from the playground of IRC Village High School under Nayapalli police limits here Tuesday morning. Prima facie, it appears to be a murder case.

The deceased was identified as Purna Chandra Nayak, 35, of Kapileswarpur village under Niali police limits in Cuttack. He was staying in Rental Colony area of the city and was making his living by working in his uncle’s fast food shop at a daily wage of Rs 200.

He had opened a school at Salia Sahi where some local students have been studying.

According to sources, locals spotted the body of Nayak in a pool of blood at the playground. On being informed, police reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem. The post-mortem would be conducted Wednesday, said sources.

Prima facie, police investigations suggest that some miscreants killed Nayak by slitting his throat with sharp weapons. Another deep cut mark was also found on his cheek.

Nayak is survived by his wife and a six-year-old son. Investigation is on, sources said.
