Prez Murmu, PM Modi, HM Amit Shah congratulate Neeraj Chopra on historic gold

New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday congratulated Neeraj Chopra for winning a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships and said he exemplifies excellence.

In a series of tweets, the President said, “Neeraj Chopra adds yet another golden page to the history of Indian sports by becoming the first ever Indian to win a gold medal in World Athletics Championships. His superlative performance in the javelin throw finals at Budapest will inspire millions of our youth.”

She said, “India is proud of Neeraj Chopra. I convey my heartiest congratulations to him. I wish his legend grows with more such feats. It is a matter of great national pride that three Indians, Neeraj Chopra, D.P. Manu and Kishore Jena together competed in the final round of the World Athletics Championships 2023 javelin event and they finished in the top six. I congratulate each one of them. They have taken Indian athletics to unprecedented heights. I wish them many more laurels in the future.”

In a tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “The talented Neeraj Chopra exemplifies excellence. His dedication, precision and passion make him not just a champion in athletics but a symbol of unparalleled excellence in the entire sports world. Congrats to him for winning the Gold at the World Athletics Championships.”

Home Mnister Amit Shah took to X and said, “Ace javelin thrower Neeraj Chopa scripted history by winning India’s first-ever gold medal at the World Athletics Championship. Today, he has set a new benchmark of success
for upcoming athletes to achieve. My warmest congratulations to him. May he continue to soar high.”

Shah also posted a video of the winning moments of Neeraj Chopra.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge took to X, formerly Twitter and said, “The magnificent performance of Neeraj Chopra has again made India proud. We are thrilled to witness that his brilliance, dedication and hard work has now made him the first Indian to win a gold medal at the prestigious World Athletics Championships and added another feather to his growing list of stupendous achievements.”

“Many congratulations Neeraj. May you grow from strength to strength and keep inspiring young sportspersons,” the Congress leader added.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh also praised Chopra and in a tweet said, “Neeraj Chopra’s gold medal in the javelin throw was fantastic. He’s not only a world champion but also a true champion outside of the track field. Who can forget his courageoue stance earlier in May this year, when the protesting women wrestlers where dragged on the streets of the national capital.”

“At the same time, the performance of our 4×400 metre relay team comprising of Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Amoj Jacob,  Muhammed Ajmal Variyathodi and Rajesh Ramesh truly captured the nation’s hearts. Their performance demonstrates the spirit of: Judega Bharat, Jeetega INDIA,” Ramesh said, highlighting the performance of Indian athletes.

The remarks came after India’s Olympic champion Chopra won a historic maiden gold medal for the country in the World Athletics Championships  Sunday.

Chopra, who has been bothered by an injury in the last few months, killed the competition in the Hungarian capital with a massive throw of 88.17 in his second turn,

Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem took the silver medal, the first World Championship medal for his country, with a distance of 87.82 while Czech Republic’s Yakub Vadlejch retained the bronze he won in Oregon last year, with a distance of 86.67.
